Learn how to speak in front of large groups and effect a powerful presentation. You can be coached on mastering the art of the deal and how to negotiate a business transaction. The foundation of self improvement is confidence and knowing how to conduct yourself in a business setting.
Attending networking events is great practical training and can in fact be a powerful use of your time. While you eventually need to analyze which events and recurring meetings are most effective for you, attend as many as possible at first to test drive and polish your communication skills. Prepare to enjoy yourself on such occasions, and understand that some of your behavior needs to be preplanned. We have developed a networking success-sheet for entrepreneurs. The basic tenets are as follows:
- Prepare
- Know in advance the exact location of the venue and whether the event is formal or social
- Understand the focus of the gathering
- Bring the right type and sufficient quantity of promotional materials
- Pre-select the time in your week for your follow-ups
- Connect
- Set your attitude and mental and physical state to the appropriate energy level
- Bring your full attention to the event
- Target your pre-determined goals
- Step out of your comfort zone and meet new people
- Give
- Take the emphasis off yourself
- Listen to the people you meet; they will remember you because you are an effective listener
- Discern what they are looking for and if you can connect them with resources
- Ask
- Be armed with a concise and interesting elevator speech that will showcase your genuine passion for your work
- Include a component of what makes you different
- Ask for what you need, whether a specific connection, some team members, or workshop participants
- Receive
- You already blocked the time to follow-up with those who show interest in your goods and services so: call them, email them, or send a personal note.
- Don’t start hitting them with a barrage of unsolicited advertisements to hire you
- Build a relationship with your connections through appropriate communication
Before your next networking event, take a look at how you conducted yourself on the last one and really assess where your weaknesses are and how to devise a plan to surmount those weaknesses. If you understand how to effectively network and how to show up with the right energy and attitude, the results will be reflected in your bottom line.
